Georgette Saree, from where the fabric is adopted by Indians?
Call

Think, you are entering into a high society snob-fest.

Amidst the smell of expensive perfumes and roaring laughter, a giggling gossip comes to your ear, murmuring,” Oh my God, she looks gorgeous.’

Don’t you feel good about yourself?

Of course, you do, right?

This sudden flood of compliments, mesmerised gazes, and unwanted attentions - the centre of all is your Saree, a Georgette saree. The 6 yards of fabric successfully fit not only in traditional customs but also in high-end cocktail parties.

Let’s delve deep to know more about the charm of Georgette silk.

Origin of the Georgette Saree

Though the ‘look and feel’ of the saree gave you a South Delhi vibe. But you will be surprised to know that this fabric actually originated in France.

India, known for its traditional attire, ‘sarees’, how come France walks in?

It also has a story.

One day, a French dressmaker named Georgette de la Plante playfully started twisting the silk yarns to make a gown for herself.

After doing this for a prolonged period, she realised she had made something which looked super strong, crinkled yet very lightweight.

She named it  ‘Goergett’ after her name. And that’s how, dear reader, fashion founds its new venture.

How has the georgette saree been made?

Over time, this fabric has gained popularity throughout the world. Indian fashion also couldn’t resist its magnetic glamour. That's why, along with the glory of Jamdani, Benarasi and Kanjivaram, Indian fashion simply adopted goergett like its own.

The secret of its glamour lies in the ‘twist’. The threads are cranked up tightly, in alternating directions, and give the fabric a crepe-like texture.

There are two types of twists that are done to make ‘Georgette’.One is called the S twist, and another is called the Z twist. Technically, they are done in a different format.

But once done, the fabric looks so seductive that it can cling to curves without being scandalous

Modern Goergetts are made of polyester and nylon, which makes its usage even easier than before. Such as, if you spill sauces on your Goergett saree while eating egg rolls, wash it gently, and it will be ready for your next party.
