Hi, my dear readers. I know, you are excited about what exactly we are going to unveil today. But by reading the headline, you already get some idea about it.

Let me tell you, today’s story is quite unique.

It is a love story, but without drama, messy romance, and the weekly break-up rituals.

Now, if you are thinking, ‘ Why am I describing a saree like this? ' Bear with me because Mulmul is ‘something more than this’.

Know  the history of a pure Mulmul saree

Gen Zs are the most adamant generation of all time; convincing them or getting their approval feels like shifting mountains. In such an era, if you discover something that is Gen-Z-approved, then congrats, you got a treasure, and within that treasure, Mulmul is the real “Khajana”.

The idea of making a Mulmul saree is to create fashion, which is comfortable, breathable, effortless, and acts like a champion in brutal summer.

A few centuries ago, the Dhaka city of undivided Bengal was the epicentre of this magic. Weaving mulmul is always considered an art.

It's merely like knitting threads, more like knitting a poem.

There are some historical nuggets commonly heard about mumul saree. These are also the tricks for identifying the real mulmul fabric.

It says the real mulmul fabric is so delicate that the entire six yards can be pulled through a tiny finger ring smoothly without resistance.

This fabric proved its dominance even in mughal era as well.

The historians claimed the Mughls are also obsessed with pure mulmul. They gave an interesting name to each variant of Mulmul.

For example, the most lightweight Mulmuls are called Baft- Hawa by the Mughals, and the softest one is called Shabnam by them.

Let me clarify the meanings to you. Baft-Hawa means the woven air, and Shabnam is called evening dew.

But though it is preferred by the Mughal Princess Zeb-un-Nissa, the thin cotton still lacked the main character energy of the royal court.

Know how Mulmul Saree gets its evaluation

In the early 1st century, Mulmul has also been appearing in ancient Greek and  Roman texts.

So if you dig into its history, you will understand that this fabric was previously used only by the community called Malboos Khas.

Arab traders introduced this fabric to Europe via Iraq, and during that journey, the mulmul got its official term, Muslin. \

During the time of British colonisation, Bengal’s handloom industry thrived, and this is how the mass-production of the mulmul started happening during the pre-independence era.

During the Swadeshi movement, along with tant and khadi cotton, mulmul fabrics were also an indispensable part of that era.

That's why this fabric is also called freedom fabric for a long period of time.

Fast forward to 2026, and this fabric has its relevance for its effortless grace.
