Patuas, or the chitrakaras, have a strong urge for storytelling; They used to recite the life story of Krishna and Lord Jagannatha in their own way within their village. Later on, they channelise this urge and passion into their art.

Patachitra is made using natural colours. These colours are not made of any artificial reactant, but from the indigenous sources. For example, vermilion is made out of hingol, Gerua is made of red brick, blue is derived from indigo, and black is from lamp shoot.

The Process of Patachitra Painting 

The painting also follows a strict sequence. 

First, the cotton fabric is coated with tamarind seed glue and soft stone powder, named ‘ kiothatta’, which helps to create a smooth, sturdy base for ‘Patachitra’. Then the sketching is done with a raw charcoal or pencil.

Once the sketching is completed, the colour is filled with delicate brushstrokes.

After the painting attains its finishing touch, the painting is glazed with lacquer. Then the whole painting is gently heated to enhance its longevity and water resistance.

Such an ancient technique proved that traditional knowledge is way ahead of its time.
